Maybe you've participated in our Gravel 101 clinic, or you are just RABID about the next time you can get out onto the dirt in your favorite local wilderness. Our Gravel 201 clinic reviews skills taught in our 101 clinic, but then adds new advanced skills (cornering, descending, WHEEL LIFTS, and more) that will make you feel comfortable when you're ready to sign up for your first event.
We don't just answer questions at our clinics—we teach the principles and then we go and PRACTICE. We will spend 90 minutes teaching you all the pertinent skills: bike-body separation, using your body weight to keep the bike under you, how to corner safely and quickly (stay OFF those brakes!), where to focus your eyes while descending, and how to manage awkward or technical sections. Once we introduce the skills we will go and PLAY, covering a 25-mile nearby ride that includes all of the features we talked about in the skills portion.
This is an Oregon Bicycle Racing sanctioned event, and requires either an annual OBRA license or a one-day license. You can either purchase a one-day license ahead of time at checkout or at the clinic itself.
One of our two cycling-focused coaches, Annick Chalier has a long history of cycling excellence in the Pacific Northwest. She has raced on UCI teams at the Vuelta Femenina Colombia and on professional cycling teams such as Automatic.
A consummate educator, Annick is one of Campfire Endurance's staff coaches and and instructor for Brave Endeavors. She loves nothing more than demystifying riding, making it more fun, safer, and faster for all of her students. You will come away from the clinic with all of your gravel questions answered and your skills leveled up!
Our head coach, Chris Bagg has raced at road, cyclocross, and gravel events around the United States and across the Globe. He's finished in the top 25 overall at Unbound Gravel in 2019 and can be seen fording one of the 12 river crossings at The Rift gravel in Iceland ion 2023.
Chris raced triathlon professionally for 15 years, stepping away from elite level competition in 2021. Before he was a full time coach and athlete, he taught high school English, reflecting a goal at Campfire that our coaches have solid educational bona fides.
Gravel 201 provides an intermediate-friendly session aimed at helping gravel cyclists elevate their riding and racing skills on mixed terrain by building confidence and comfort on a variety of surface types and technical features. And we will also HAVE FUN! This clinic builds off of our Gravel 101 clinic for new gravel riders. Some may not be familiar with all of that content so a brief review of topics is included.
We will teach advanced bike handling skills on gravel and dirt to assist with climbing, descending, cornering, wheel lifts, and steep transitions.
We'll spend 90 minutes covering the skills necessary to thrive at gravel riding and racing, and then put those skills to the test out on the roads around The Dalles, heading out for a 90- to 120-minute ride on the gravel of the magnificent Columbia Gorge.
